Agreed. Seems clear that this would be better implemented via `--device` with CDI in #1394 and potentially #1395 ... given that things are moving in that direction generally across runtimes.
In 4.0.0, OCI registry related auth has been split out of the `remote` command to a `registry` command, and documentation updated. This should hopefully clarify the procedures related to this...

@aamster - are you able to reproduce on a newer version of SingularityCE? The version you have listed... 3.7.0 .. is prior to the fork between SingularityCE & Apptainer, so...
