Come up with way to Beta test new releases.

@toshiya44, @belldandu, @typhoon71, @dreamer2908 I'm now up to 1600+ downloads of the plug-in. Even if only 1 in 10 people actually use it, if I post a version to the store that's broken, that's 160 angry people. So, need to come up with a way to beta test software before releasing to general public. Suggestions, anyone?

For Mozilla, I suppose the answer would be the beta channel. For Chrome I don't know if they have something similar. If that isn't good (as you said you wanted to work on the plugin more before a complete review by mozilla), I'd say beta testing could be done -here-, by users, manually installing the addon (possible in Chrome and in Firefox Dev) and reporting. Maybe a "release issue where one suscribes if inerested? I can help with it, but I can't assure you any continuity (I may be slow, or disappear from the net for some time).

This applies to me too. Although I have to figure out how to keep more than one copy of this extension in the browser at the same time. ( right now it replaces the previous one when I try to install a new version).

According to this, you can have a small number of people beta test the Chrome extension.

I think the problem with that is it makes the entire extension Unlisted. i.e. If I mark the latest version "unlisted" the entire thing goes unlisted, so no-one can get at the "last known good" public version. I might be wrong, but I'm too scared to try it in case I'm right.

If you're OK with a manual install, how would you like the plug-in delivered. Are you OK with downloading the source from the GitHub Sonako branch when I e-mail to tell you there's new features? Or is there some other way you'd like it delivered. e.g. Zip file emailed to you, or maybe a zip posted on the Baka Tsuki forum?

I'm fine with getting the source from the GitHub Sonako branch when needed, and manually install and then test. Better not mailing zips, dirctly using GitHub is safer/cleaner. The addon is restartless anyway, so one can delete the old one, install the beta, test it, and if there's a problem remove it and reinstall the old one; since there's not a lot of config to do (like, say, noscript or uBlockOrigin) itìs quite easy. To notify testers a notification via GitHub (or by email) will do; in my case it would be better than posting it on BakaTsuki since I don't really read forums that much.

I'm fine with downloading from github when you notify us.

I'm fine with getting it from GitHub, too.

@typhoon71, @toshiya44, @dreamer2908 Thanks, I'll let you know when there's a new build available. Probably not until the weekend.

@dteviot As far as i'm concerned beta testing should be done from releases on github. Everyone here said what i wanted to say already because i was late in receiving emails for some weird reason (thanks google).

Also sorry for the late reply guys.

Will it be a good idea to add a note about beta testing and link to the branch in the description? (in the page for extension in Firefox and Chrome store) We might be able to get more people in it.

toshiya44 avatar Jul 13 '16 02:07 toshiya44

@toshiya44 It won't hurt... And descriptions have been updated.
