error about "encrypted" backup

Open cjhin opened this issue 8 years ago • 8 comments

I backed up my phone through iTunes, and then attempted to open an "iPhone backup" via iMessageAnalyzer.

When I select the most recent backup folder I got the message:

Either the iPhone's text message backups were not found in this directory or they were encrypted. When syncing or backing up with iTunes, disable encryption

After noodling around a little, I was able to get it to work by instead selecting the subdirectory backup_directory/3d/

Apologies in advance if I'm being silly and missed something in the readme that already explains how to do this 😋

Hmmm, I think I fixed it. Will you give this version a shot and let me know how it goes?

So it sort of worked?

The app successfully opened the file and didn't throw the "encrypted message" error, but it looks like it's not pulling the messages correctly. It pulls a total of one message for one conversation, and then all other conversations just say "Never Messaged / No Message with ###"

I double checked with the old version to make sure I wasn't selecting the wrong db/file and that worked, so I'm 99% sure I'm choosing a valid backup directory.

Also to clarify, using your fixed version from the dropbox link it pulls only one message regardless of whether I select the root directory of the backup or backup_directory/3d/

Hey, sorry for my delayed response. Try this iMessage Analyzer.zip

I just backed my phone (iPhone 7 on iOS 10.2) up to iTunes (12.5.4.42) and ran the iMessage Analyzer using that backup and I had no issue

screenshot 2017-01-08 23 24 49 In that screenshot, the "34ae281..." directory is my latest backup (ignore the "Date Added" column - it's inaccurate), and the "49000..." is the directory of an old iPhone backup. screenshot 2017-01-08 23 24 59 Click inside the "32ae281..." directory so that your screen looks like this and try running it. screenshot 2017-01-08 23 38 02 The next screen for me then looked like that (without everything being censored/blocked out)

Anyway, let me know if you can get it to work

@cjhin Did you have the chance to try it out?

@dsouzarc ah sorry for the delay! I had it downloaded and then got distracted and forgot to finish :(. Anyways, it works, thanks so much!

@cjhin Awesome. Thank you :) Would you happen to have any additional comments/feedback on the Analyzer? Like things I could improve on or features to add?

Sorry again for the delay, couple thoughts:

  • First off, this is really useful and fun to play with, well done!
  • Big picture
    • I might be doing something incorrectly, but it seems that every time I open the app I have to reselect the backup file and it recreates a new sql file for the app? Seems like it might be nice to have the app remember the sql file and not create new ones each time.
  • Message view
    • I like being able to see all messages in a thread easily, even with large threads (10k+), nice job!
  • Analysis view
    • I don't understand what the "clear" button does?
    • It's not clear that "double click" on the chart zooms out to the full date range (it took me a while to figure out, and it's a very useful feature, might be nice to add help text somewhere)
    • Would be nice if the string search had a regex feature
    • Selecting both "All Time" and "Compare to others" doesn't seem to do anything for me in your recent fix version you sent me. I think I remember that this used to actually work though?
      • And actually, all the charts the compare to "all other messages", such as the "Pie chart total messages", don't seem to work either

If you want, I'm happy to try and poke around at the code and see if I can figure some of it out, just let me know what you'd prefer!
