According to the following pull request on the Anki-Android repo, the ability to use a custom sync server is now enable for the Android client. Haven't tested it though.

(After confirmed as usable) please update your README accordingly.

@AFulgens - According to the last comment on this thread the maintainer is planning to update the README once he's done a code review and pushed a new release

Worth noting also that the PR you referenced went into AnkiDroid 2.6alpha3 and they are currently on Anki-Droid 2.6alpha21 - meaning this functionality has not actually been pushed to the stable version on the Play Store yet. Currently 2.5.4

Thanks, timrea! For reference, the link is saying that a version of AnkiDroid was released that can set a custom sync server URL. PR to update the README welcome! :-)
