[Data] Open health facility data in Africa

Open anelda opened this issue 4 years ago • 5 comments

Hi all,

I'm involved in the Wellcome Open Research Fund project - afrimapr - which is creating R building blocks to make health data in Africa more visible through mapping. This resource might be useful for others to build scripts/maps/apps with. It's in very early stages of development.

Please see https://www.lstmed.ac.uk/news-events/news/open-data-and-software-to-support-the-covid-19-response-in-africa and our website at http://afrimapr.org. We're currently working to make health facilities (from open data i.e. WHO and healthsites.io ) building blocks in R.

If you have any ideas about how this may be useful to you or others, please get in touch.

@anelda Is the raw data accessible?

Hi @esube, we are only working with datasets that are open. If you use R, you can access these datasets via the afrimapr afrihealthsites package (http://afrimapr.org/code) alternatively you can download the shapefile directly from healthsites.io and the KEMRI Excel spreadsheet directly from Figshare - https://figshare.com/articles/Public_health_facilities_in_sub_Saharan_Africa/7725374.

Let me know if you have any questions?

Hi, I am working on a project to map COVID-19 testing facilities. Do you identify those in your dataset? https://github.com/IneffableKoD/cov19testmap Also, feel free to use my data.

Additionally, dumping two resources:

Hi @IneffableKoD, the data that is available from KEMRI/WHO was collected and last updated before COVID so that dataset doesn't contain the information. And although healthsites.io is collecting data on an ongoing basis, I would be very surprised if COVID info was already in there. Those are the only two datasets currently available through afrimapr.
