Holes for heat set inserts incorrect size

Open darraghbr opened this issue 4 years ago • 1 comments

Let me preface this with the fact that I've not used heat set inserts, so I don't know how sensitive they are to diameter changes.

The holes in the current design are 3.7 mm diameter with a short countersink out to 4 mm. The manufacturers specs for M3 inserts state the hole should be 4 mm.

Does the current design work fine or should the hole sizes be changed? 0.3 mm is not much but is it the difference between a part cracking or not?

This is a valid issue but it depends on the material, and also depends on which kind of heat inserts you use. If you use the cheapo ones which are essentially spool shaped, and if you use a material like PETG, having this extra bit of material can help. With PLA this might not be the case.

I think this would be a good issue to keep around, especially if people have issues with printing or assembly.
