Just noting that I spoke to @philippjfr and he agreed with my approach outlined above.
This bug is consistent with the toggling of colorbar as well. Here using hvPlot. 
I think there are multiple issues going on here. You can make the box_edit tool appear in the toolbar with opts(tools=['box_edit'].. but there's still a bug preventing this from working.....
