ebird: Automatic rare bird alert
Automatically send a message when a species eBird considers rare is posted in a specified location
- Include species comment from checklist
- Link to checklist
- Maybe if photos are included embed or link to them? Or at least indicate that they exist.
- Restrict the time so it doesn't send a message is someone submits a historial checklist - maybe only do it if the checklist is from the past 2 weeks or something?
This could be really annoying if a certain species is seen by a ton of people on the same day, I'm not sure if that would prevent this feature from existing or if there are smart ways to get around that
- Maybe don't report a species if it's already been reported that day or hour? On the one hand it would be helpful to know if the bird is still there but on the other hand maybe everyone doesn't need to be reminded every half an hour that it's still there.
- If a species has been reported at a more recent time, don't show older reports of the species at the same location if they are submitted (e.g. someone posts a checklist from 10am and then a few hours later someone else posts a checklist from 8am - don't post about the 8am checklist). But if the same species is reported from a different hotspot then it could be a different individual and worth notifying about (although personal locations and hotspots right beside each other would mess with this... maybe only if the location is a certain distance away, but that sounds complicated)
Might be able to do this by checking for updates to an alert page on eBird? e.g. rare birds in Ontario https://ebird.org/canada/alert/summary?sid=SN35610
