Mouse not showing until opening xfce

I am having an issue with my arch chroot, if I just chroot in, then run startx which launches i3 the session starts up but the mouse is invisible. However if I then exit i3, start xfce4 with startxfce4 the mouse displays. Then if I log out again and open i3 with startx the mouse is there.

What am I missing that makes the mouse visible that xfce handles but i3 does not? If there is a command or something I can add it to my i3config to run on launch.

Have you tried xinit instead of startx?

Can you post the output of croutonversion?
