Mackup symlink configuration

Open anthonysexton opened this issue 1 year ago • 10 comments

There's every chance this didn't work for me because I don't really know what I am doing...

Working through the configuration and running Mackup had it backing up to Dropbox which I understand to be the default provider. After trying a couple of things, I went back to an older version of your repo and added the Mackup config symlink with $HOME in the path:

ln -s $HOME/.dotfiles/.mackup.cfg $HOME/.mackup.cfg

When re-running 'mackup backup', this then correctly detected the iCloud storage preference and was good to go.

Thanks @anthonysexton. Did you follow https://github.com/driesvints/dotfiles?tab=readme-ov-file#setting-up-your-mac and Cd' into the dotfiles repo before running the fresh script?

I thought I did. I would have run them a couple of times in the end as it stopped a couple of times for some reason.

bit odd. I'm not sure there's much here for me to move forward with. Are you happy with closing this one?

driesvints avatar Nov 14 '24 10:11 driesvints

Yep- I will give it another run when I set up the next clean mac and see what happens (with better notes!)

This might be related to Mackup no longer supporting new versions of MacOS: https://github.com/lra/mackup?tab=readme-ov-file#warning

Thanks @imacrayon that's probably it. We should look into an alternative then..

driesvints avatar Dec 16 '24 08:12 driesvints

@driesvints Any update on an alternative already?

MichaelDeBoey avatar Mar 16 '25 18:03 MichaelDeBoey

No. I probably won't have any time anytime soon to look into it so appreciate any help here.

The following items are what I could gather regarding the issue on mackup's backlog. Hope it helps and gets you updated to current state.

Is this the PR to help this issue?

On another note, someone already did figure out a solution in a PR but it seems to be too big to review.

There was a poll here recently.

Thanks @j-ilden I really appreciate you taking the time. If I understand this correctly, the PR with the --copy-only flag basically behaves the same as mackup backup except that it doesn't creates symlinks but it only one-time performs a backup? If so then yes that could be a viable alternative. It won't save your settings if your computer crashes but at least you have the ability to backup your settings before installing fresh.

Looks like this is implemented now in the latest markup version. Thanks all
