Currently https://mat.boum.org/ says that development is on hold, Python 3 isn't supported, and suggests not to use the tool. Perhaps we should consider alternatives?
Hmmm, one option would be using exiftool, maybe with https://github.com/smarnach/pyexiftool (Python bindings for exiftool) but that doesn't look actively maintained and isn't on pypi. I'll look into it more +...
