What causes a File Access Error message?

DTA 3.0.8, Windows 7

"File Access Error" is not expected, but it is displayed for certain files. Sometimes the download of the file is successful when I try it again, and sometimes it isn't. This seems to happen randomly, so I don't know how to reproduce it.

I'm also getting the "File access error" randomly ans, the same as you, sometimes it will be successful if I try again and sometimes it won't.

I got the same problem since the update, several image files loaded up to 90% and then the file access error. I was frothing at the mouth today when a 10gb movie file stopped at 98% and returned the same error. Flashget had no problems completing the file.

I got the File Access Error again. I was then able to save the file successfully by right-clicking on the link and selecting "Save link as".

This bug is really annoying, and the worst thing is that the developers seem to have done nothing about it. This problem started popping up long ago, after they changed the UI a while back.

Indeed. How hard can it be to search for the error string in the code, determine how the code reaches that point, and at least tell us what the cause might be?

I'm having this bug, too. And i'm on Mac OS X. I confirm that it occurred, like AryaStark99 said, along the UI change: while they put in some really useful features, they dragged along this bug.

Attached you should find the log, i just stripped the URL (Forum registration needed) and the local path. log.txt

Just a quick note: when a URL gets the "file access error" it will always get it, even if you retry or delete and add it again

That has not been my experience. For me, sometimes retrying it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I have to delete it and start over, sometimes not.

Maybe i've been unlucky, or i stopped retrying too early :), but i picked a couple of dozens of failed URLs and even after 20-30 retries i keep getting this error.

Right now, to bypass this i export the links and download them with wget (wget -i <file containing URLS list>), but this was easier before Bug #159 popped up: Now, since export as text doesn't work either, i have to export as HTML and cleanup the file...

Looks like a size-related issue: i only get this problem with files between (approximately) 1 and 2 MB, not with any other filesize.

I've had this same persistent problem for many months. Tonight while playing with settings, I resolved it - all of my old failed downloads have completed successfully. I don't know if it's one or a combination of these settings, I'm just sharing it here in case it helps someone. Note that my downloads complete successfully, but slowly.

Segments per download: 3 Download start order: Fair + Slow - Evenly Distributed Downloads per Server: 1

I hope it helps one of you.

YES! I left untouched the start order, but changing the other two parameters fixed the issue for me as well. Within the next couple of days i'll try reverting them back to the original state, to see if the problem still occurs, then i'll try changing one at a time, maybe we can spot the culprit.

Luca - awesome! Note one more thing. I had about 200 files queued to download. There were actually about 10 that "failed" even after my changes - I had to restart them a few times but eventually had success. So not a complete solution but so far much better than before.

I have had this issue for some time but never thought it is related to Downthemall. Today I had this error again and searched to find this thread. Thanks DrHands for the hint, and I resolved it by change Segments per download to 3. The file size is 1.94MB. I noticed the segment display has a glitch of 1/4 and then restart with 1/3. So this maybe related to something about segmenting. HTH.

I had the same "file access error", reduced segments to 2, re-added same file, downloaded with no problems

maybe it's related to small size files and segments

Un-ticking "Start a new segment after a previous segment finishes" seemed to solve it for me, downloaded around 1200 5-35 MB files, 12.1GB worth without a single drama after I did this. Other settings 3 segments per download, Download start order "Fair + slow", Concurrent downloads =1, Downloads per server=3.
