Crash caused by DVTExtendedPlatformInfo error - Unable to debug or deploy iOS app
Description
I updated VS for Mac and the maui workloads and am unable to debug iOS apps since. It worked before - but I don't know the exact version numbers that were installed before.

Set to Debug on local iPad
Expected: Sample app should appear on device.
Observed: See log output. App does not start on the device. A placeholder icon is created on the device screen.

Are you trying to debug a MAUI iOS app, or a .NET iOS app that doesn't use the MAUI UI framework?
Can you try installing the iOS workload dotnet workload install ios?
This is with the default MAUI template. I have the same problem with our production app, but wanted to see whether it's a problem with our settings or the system as a whole.
When running dotnet workload install ios no new workloads are installed.
After fiddling around, deleting /bin and /obj and stuff like that I now get a somewhat more helpful error:

I'm having the same issue trying to run my Xamarin App on two of my devices. Interestingly enough, it does still work on one of my devices. Clean install doesn't fix it, clean build doesn't fix it.
I was able to fix this problem by removing the <RuntimeIdentifiers>ios-arm64</RuntimeIdentifiers> setting from my csproj file. It's not clear to me why this would cause this error but apparently it does.
Same issue, seems to appear after installing the newest Xamarin. I also don't have RuntimeIdentifiers in my csproj file unfortunately.
Note: Uninstalling and Reinstalling Xcode did not help.
I updated to Visual Studio 17.6 (build 1575) and XCode Version 14.3.1 (14E300c). Just for kicks, I updated all workloads once I updated XCode:
# in my case it will target maui-ios, maui-android, maui, and maccatalyst
sudo dotnet workload update
I then removed the local cache for Visual Studio:
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/VisualStudio
This last step probably got things going again. Hope this might be able to help others.

@grimmi I wonder if you could edit the title of this issue to something like "Crash caused by DVTExtendedPlatformInfo error" or etc -- this is also causing our Release versions to crash on launch and isn't limited to debugging problems.
My contribution is even less helpful, but I was running into this error on my physical iOS devices. I tested out a file new XF app and that ran under the same bundle id perfectly, so its definitely a maui tooling issue...

It's definitely not MAUI specific issue, as I have the exact same problem with my Xamarin Forms app on two different Macbooks ever since upgrading everything / installing everything on a fresh mac.

I get the exactly same log when trying to run it on a physical device and when I tap the icon it says "This app was signed with a distribution certificate, you need to manully open the app". A basic iOS app with the same bundle id deploys fine through XCode and when I create a basic Xamarin Forms project with the same bundle id it also works fine so the profiles/certificates are 100% fine. Cleaned obj/bin folders a milion times, restarted everything, created new profiles, changed csproj and installed workloads according to the suggestions in this topic and nothing worked.
I have the same issue than everyone (I got the message "Encountered infinite recursion while looking...")

In my case, my app is a .Net iOS 7 app, not MAUI If I remove the <RuntimeIdentifiers>ios-arm64</RuntimeIdentifiers> as suggested, it will not even compile, I'm getting the error message that I need to include ios-arm64 At some point it deployed to the physical device after using
sudo dotnet workload update rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/VisualStudio
But not anymore
Any additional suggestions?
In Windows sometimes I solve problems removing .vs directory after a vs update
I did a complete hard drive and system reset and installed everything fresh. Still doesn't work and a new app made with the same bundle id and using the same profiles does work.
I copied the whole provisioning config portion of the .csproj file from the test app to my app and still got the same error.
This makes me think this is perhaps an issue with the code itself or maybe a problem with one of the nugets.
Also having the same issue. What works for me is (only tried with iOS simulator so far)... Kill VS Delete Bin / Obj Open VS Wait for package restores Run
However, eventually subsequent deployments fail and have to do the same jig all over again.

Yep, just wasted another few hours today fiddling around and suddenly it worked again. But I have no clue what provokes this error nor what really solves.
I am experiencing the same issue on a Xamarin.Forms / Xamarin.iOS app, so not just specific to MAUI.
...aaaaaand it's back again. This is a serious problem for us as we're unable to release anything. We really need a solution to this problem.
We at least need acknowledgement that this issue is under investigation. So far we haven't heard anything back for over two months...

Going through the backlog, you didn't answer my question: Do you have the same issue if you make an iOS app outside of the MAUI UI Framework? If you create a new iOS app with dotnet new ios and try to deploy it, does it work?
My guess right now, based on the backlog here, is there is an issue with the underlying iOS .NET Tooling, and not something specific to the MAUI UI project (This repo) and unless it only occurs with MAUI UI specific apps, should probably be moved to https://github.com/xamarin/xamarin-macios

As others have said in the meantime: Yes, this problem also occurs without MAUI in a freshly created (with dotnet new ios) iOS app with no changes. Apparently it also occurs in "old" Xamarin.Forms apps.
Regarding moving this issue to the xamarin repo - is that something you can do or should I open a new issue over there and link to this one?

the important part is this:
warning MT1043: Failed to launch the application using the instruments service. Will try launching the app using gdb service.

The MT1043 warning sometimes happens when the device has been updated, but the Xcode in question has not (the fix would be to use a newer Xcode). I've also seen it when a device gets into a broken state (rebooting the device and Mac tends to fix this).
Not finding the app might be because installing it failed earlier on, probably due to the same root cause. I'm not sure why the IDE blindly goes on after installation failed (I've seen that too myself), but that's a different issue.
I'm assuming that rebooting the device and Mac won't fix the problem due to the time that has passed since this was filed, so my advice would be to try creating a new project in Xcode and deploying that. Sometimes Xcode will auto-fix problems, and afterwards things just work. If that doesn't work I can provide instructions to try to install/launch using the command line, which may reveal more information.

I created a new iOS app in XCode and was able to deploy it onto the device. After that I went back to VS to try and debug my own app and got this error (which happened once before already):

Do you get the same infinite recursion if you try a new project from a template?
No, I can now debug both a MAUI app as well as a "normal" iOS app.
Then we'll need a test project we can use to reproduce your error.
I'll also add that I am seeing the same issue. This is a Xamarin.iOS app which was upgraded to Microsoft.iOS app and has multiple native reference binding projects. This is the second such application we have migrated from Xamarin.iOS to Microsoft.iOS. The first application worked well, but this one does not. Things work well in the simulator, but the app crashes on an iPhone.
