usb/serial driver

I am using Catalina 10.15.7 on a mac pro 3,1 (early 2008) and none of my usb/serial devices work with Apple drivers. This includes both CH340 and FTDI serial adaptors, and a bitscope micro which uses FTDI. The devices appear in /dev, but don't communicate properly. Using a loopback in CoolTerm with no handshaking, the data seems to get through, but each character is followed by a long string of zeros. I can't get handshaking to work at all.

The same devices work fine on a newer mac running an official Catalina install.
