Yeah @rderooy as James-F has pointed it out, our default volume levels are too high. I set the master to 40 in my global config, so at some point we should think about using realistic headrooms.

PCSPEAKER at 100 feels like someone is trying to rip your soul out when an error beep is played.

I set the MASTER volume to 40 in my primary config too, but the audio interfaces should default to realistic headrooms still. Especially the SB and the GUS, the two most common options.
I would say the worst violators of sound volume vs other interfaces are PCSPEAKER and FSYNTH. I have both set at 50 to dial them down into a correct range against other interfaces. We probably need to do something for these two to get the out-of-the-box experience right after 0.81.0 ships.
