Phoenix giving "Install a Nokia dongle" error

Open james10424 opened this issue 1 year ago • 14 comments

I've installed Nokia_Connectivity_Cable_Driver.exe and restarted my PC, but Phoenix is still giving this error.

Any idea how to make it work?

Hello James10424... Were you able to solve the issue with Nokia_Connectivity_Cable_Driver.exe? Are you using Windows?

I might give it a try.

I'm not able to solve this problem, I'm using Windows 10

Bummer... I am also looking for N95 web sites that are not old and dead. Have you found any?

just to make it clear, phoenix wont work on win10 without crashing the system,it uses old USB instruction set that isn't supported after win7, so the NT kernel crashes.

the solution is to use a virtual machine that runs win7 (install the nokia driver and apps inside of it). this only works on top of win10, i dont think it will work on linux.

when flashing, the phone will restart, the VM will loose connection so you'll have to make sure the VM gets access to the device again during flashing

Hello mutchiko...

Thank you so much for your email. I need to update my Nokia N95 black. Also, I would like to add some games, music, and maybe a movie or two. I have installed a 16 GB micro SD card without issue. I have some older laptops. I could install XP or Windows 7 on one of them. I do have an original Nokia English CD that came with the N95.

I will head back to the GitHub site and try to understand more of what I did read. I do not fully understand all that is in your email, but I hope to dive into it further so I can learn.

May I ask what the initials "VM" stand for? Is it for "virtual machine"? If so, I should not have any issues if using a laptop with XP or Windows 7 installed, correct?

Thanks again for your email and the additional information,

Best, Jack

Hello James10424... I think our issue is that we both were using Windows 10. I have some old laptops, so I am going to install Windows 7 or maybe XP and give it a go. If you do not have a old computer laying around, you can install a virtual machine in Windows 10 as mutchiko has suggested.. I have never done that before, but i did find this link that may be helpful:

https://www.supportyourtech.com/articles/how-to-install-virtual-machine-in-windows-10-a-step-by-step-guide/

I will post my results here after I have installed XP or Windows 7 on an old laptop. Let me know how you have come along.

Jack

@mraroid could you please tell me why do you need Phoenix software?

mutchiko avatar Feb 02 '25 15:02 mutchiko

Hello mutchiko...

Thank you for your email and question.

I am very new to the N95 phone. I have the CD that came with the english version of the manual. I would like to install the Nokia software on an old laptop that I can install XP or Windows 7 on. It seems like the software might let me move music I have on my computer to the N95 with this CD. I would also like to see if I can move photos taken with my N95 to my computer with this Nokia CD. But I am unsure if it will do that or not. I would like to see if my N95 is running the latest firmware and OS that was made to run my N95. I am unsure how to do that. Maybe the Phoenix software might help?

If all of that works out, I would like to see if I can find a way to install a couple of games and maybe a movie or two. I have been able to connect my N95 to my home WiFi, and I have installed a 16 GB micro SD card.

Any suggestions on what my next step should be?

Many thanks, Jack

hello jack,

im more than happy to see people still enjoying the legend, i want to tell you that im not sending you direct emails. im simply replying to the discussion on github, i highly recommend you click on the button i the end of the emails coming from it, text will be more clear, links and images will show properly.

the original nokia CD is cool, it isn't useful anymore more but please do keep it if you can, this is part of the golden days.

now let me clear things for you:

the nokia software is not important, if all what you want is to move files (music/photos/videos...) from/to the phone then it is extremely simple.

the N95 is considered one of the first smartphones to exist, just like any phone nowadays, simply connect the N95 to your computer using a USB cable, any computer will work, it doesn't need to be old.

the original nokia box has that cable, but if you lost it then thats not a big deal you can buy another cable almost anywhere, this cable is called a USB mini B to USB type A

Image USB mini B

Image USB type A

Image this cable basically

once you have that cable, simply connect your N95 to you computer, it will show up like any USB flash drive, or any other phone in general, you'll find files and folders, you can copy paste your music and apps to install later. and for photos inside the phone you can copy and past them on your computer, you'll find them in one of the folders inside the phone.

I would like to see if my N95 is running the latest firmware and OS that was made to run my N95.

people often mixed the words OS and firmware together, the basically mean the same in this context. this happened a lot back in the day and gets people confused when they read through 15 years old forum posts.

to check that you simply type on the keypad *#0000# and it will automatically show up the needed info. the latest version is v35.0.002 and this is from wikipedia. you might find the Operating System version is lower, in that case we will talk about updating it using Phoenix later.

also please keep your phone off the internet, just a security measure nothing more

Hello mutchiko... Thank you for your very informative emails. I will reply to posts from GetHub, on GetHub from now on.

When I ran the command of *#0000# the response says:

S60, 3rd edition, feature pack 1.

Is this helpful?

Under the battery, the white Nokia sticker says: Model N95-1, Type-RM-159. I can list the other information on the white Nokia sticker if you wish.

As well as the original Nokia CD for the black N95, I have a paper copy of the manual. With the manual, I was able to correctly buy Nokia branded cables that let me plug the N95 into my Windows 10 computer. Some programs did not load and some would not work. That is why I thought I might try running this CD under XP or Windows 7. Will the programs on the CD work in 64 bit as well as 32 bit Windows?

I have several older Lenovo laptops that can not run anything newer then Windows 7. And someplace in a box in my basement, I have Windows XP and Windows 7 CDs. So that is why I thought I would try an older OS. Also, because I already own several older laptops as well as Windows 7 and XP, I do not have to pay any money to do this.

When I tried to run and install the Nokia CD in Windows 10, I would right click the icons, go to Properties, and then select the Compatibility tab and then select a Windows OS that was Windows 7 or XP. I did this after my first install of the CD which failed. But after doing the above, it still failed. I believe my two cable are just fine. I can look at them with my volt/ohm meter if you wish.

Thank you again for all your help. I hope others that come here can learn from my many mistakes!

Best, Jack
