@doficia just to be clear, i am to create my own icon using an application like illustrator and then create a sprite sheet? i want to make sure that i'm not overlooking any images that i should be using to create this. thanks!

I am not very familiar with Illustrator, but is not that mostly for vector graphics? Pixel art is kind of the opposite of that in some ways. I would suggest using Aseprite, PiskelApp, or Paint.Net.

But to actually answer your original question - you mention two steps, creating the icon and creating a spritesheet. There should be only one step. Creating the icon. The icon pixel art. It is not very clear what you mean by spritesheet, but that should not be necessary. :smiley:
