An unexpected error occurred while starting up. No restart from Docker desktop possible.
Description
When I startup my laptop I have configured the Docker Desktop to startup as well. In many (but not all) cases I get the error message as provided. Closing Docker Desktop and Opening it again solves the issue.
Reproduce
- Laptop startup
- The Docker desktop and Docker Engine should startup automatically
- Instead a message is show:
running engine: waiting for the VM setup to be ready: starting WSL engine: bootstrapping in the main distro: context canceled - It is not possible from the Docker Desktop Troubleshooting page to restart the engine.
Expected behavior
Docker Engine should run.

same problem happened 6h ago, was working fine all along before ; Diagnostic ID : 31AF42C5-B5D1-4CBF-85D5-8CFA687619AB/20240907161142
Similar issue has been reported on #14280 and #14294 as well.
In my case it is caused by this issue: https://github.com/docker/for-win/issues/14022
it tries to run wsl --update and I have no admin rights to run this command
Happening on my Win11 Home box. Diagnostics ID 46CA96F4-62B9-4096-8070-C1B728BC5340/20240912164528 says:
wsl update failed: updating wsl: elevated update failed: the operating system denied access to the specified file
My WSL installation is working fine (terminals and VS Code). I have Admin rights when needed, and had recently done a WSL update myself. From PowerShell:
PS C:\Windows\system32> wsl --update
Checking for updates.
The most recent version of Windows Subsystem for Linux is already installed.
PS C:\Windows\system32> wsl --version
WSL version: 2.2.4.0
Kernel version: 5.15.153.1-2
WSLg version: 1.0.61
MSRDC version: 1.2.5326
Direct3D version: 1.611.1-81528511
DXCore version: 10.0.26091.1-240325-1447.ge-release
Windows version: 10.0.22631.4037
I had this issue with 4.37.1. Tried uninstall and re-install a few times, including turning off WSL in Windows Features then turning it back on again. What seems to have helped in my case is running wsl --update I had changed my setup so wsl -update had to be run manually because I kept getting an error when DD tried to run it for me, so I guess it makes sense that running it was required (after re-installing) :)
