Access to \\.\pipe\dockerBackendApiServer is denied

Open jacob-morosco opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Description

I have sucessfully installed in PowerShell via: $ Start-Process 'Docker Desktop Installer.exe' -Wait -ArgumentList 'install', '--accept-license', '--backend=wsl-2', '--always-run-service' and $ net localgroup docker-users USERNAME /add

When Docker is run as administrator, the following error occurs: """ starting services: initializing Backend API: listening on \.\pipe\dockerBackendApiServer: open \.\pipe\dockerBackendApiServer: Access is denied. """ Reset to factory defaults has already been tried with no success.

Reproduce

  1. $ Start-Process 'Docker Desktop Installer.exe' -Wait -ArgumentList 'install', '--accept-license', '--backend=wsl-2', '--always-run-service'
  2. $ net localgroup docker-users USERNAME /add
  3. Restart computer
  4. Run Docker Desktop as administrator
  5. Click Reset to factory defaults and re-run as administrator

Expected behavior

Docker Desktop should open sucessfully and start the Docker engine.

20250404102630.zip Same issue for me.

Sitation here is it's a shared machine. Perhaps the scenario is not supported for two users to work on the same machine-wide installation of docker. Does anyone know for sure?

Same for me. I just did a fresh install of Windows 11. I have two users on this system. I installed docker desktop using one of them, and that works fine. When I go to launch docker desktop using the other user, I get this error. I have tried resetting it to factory settings, but it did nothing.

Solution that worked for me:

  1. Open Windows Task Manager as an administrator
  2. Kill all Docker related processes
  3. Restart Docker Desktop using a normal user

Solution that worked for me:

  1. Open Windows Task Manager as an administrator
  2. Kill all Docker related processes
  3. Restart Docker Desktop using a normal user

This just runs Docker as a normal user, they are trying to run it with elevated privileges.

This worked for me... It seems that Docker Desktop for Windows doesnt have a good integration yet on multi user environments as it seems impossible to run containers independently for each user available (only one user can take control of dockerd at a time

Same error for me, but i am trying to run windows docker images. So i am not using the wsl backend, but the hyper-v one.
