`/var/run/docker.sock` doesn't get generated on Docker Desktop startup

Open xcollantesbelva opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Description

I need to use the /var/run/docker.sock 3rd party socket. But event when the Allow the default Docker socket to be used (requires password) is already checked, the /var/run/docker.sock socket file does not exist.

To fix I have to:

  1. Uncheck Allow the default Docker socket to be used (requires password)
  2. Enter password
  3. Click Apply & Restart
  4. Check Allow the default Docker socket to be used (requires password)
  5. Enter password
  6. Click Apply & Restart

Then the expected /var/run/docker.sock will exist.

Reproduce

  1. Startup Docker Desktop
  2. ls /var/run/docker.sock
  3. Expected docker.sock does not exist

To fix I have to:

  1. Uncheck Allow the default Docker socket to be used (requires password)
  2. Enter password
  3. Click Apply & Restart
  4. Check Allow the default Docker socket to be used (requires password)
  5. Enter password
  6. Click Apply & Restart

Expected behavior

Allow the default Docker socket to be used (requires password) is already checked, the /var/run/docker.sock socket file exist.

EDITED:

On Mac, when docker is installed with less privileges the docker sock file is created under home directory, export DOCKER_HOST=unix:////Users/[USERNAME]/.docker/run/docker.sock

Docker desktop creates a .docker folder under the user home directory.

This is not a bug.

Issue see on Version 4.38.0 (181591).

On Settings>Advanced page we have a check box for "Allow the default Docker socket to be used (requires password)".

Once the user checks the above checkbox, the docker sock is created by docker desktop and all is well. Now for some reason, we restart docker desktop, then the settings page check box remains in checked state, but the sock file is missing. Then we have to follow steps give by xcollantesbelva to recreate the docker socket.

This most definitely is a bug, regardless of permission level, the fact that using those steps to uncheck and re-check a box to get the link established is by its nature a bug. It would be nice if this bug would get some attention as having to do this song and dance each and every time I restart my machine is getting extraordinarily old.

+1 This is still an issue. Despite the box being checked, I need to uncheck -> restart -> re-check -> restart and only then is docker.sock under /var/run
