Description

I have been trying all week to get DD to work on Windows10, and ive just had a constant headache of error after error. Now i think my pc is a mess of files, settings, changes, in wsl and elsewhere... What would be really helpful is some instructions on how to reset w10 back to original (without having to do a fresh install). For example: use 'purge', uninstall DD, delete some Docker folders, do something to wsl... And now its back to the beginning for a fresh installation... THank you.

I think there's some instructions here; but I'm not on Windows myself, and haven't tried them; https://docs.docker.com/desktop/uninstall/

thanks, but that only deals with uninstalling DD. what we all need is how to repair WSL, and anything else, DD has touched.

Hey @2morowMan - can you tell us about the issues you are seeing with WSL after uninstall?

DD problems

after installing DD, i now have a notification "errors occured during wsl startup - open event viewer"

  • open viewer just doesnt work
  • when i open viewer there's many errors. i dont know which are related... (wsl was totally fine, and tested, and used, before installing DD)

last week i installed DD, it kept turning off "engine stopped" and "an unexpected error has occurred" so i did some wsl-install, and wsl-update that worked for a while...

i realise this may not be a DD issue, per se.

Do you know of any instructions anywhere on resetting wsl to default / factory settings ?

In short, a script or instructions: a clean/complete uninstall of DD (including deletion of all files), and a reset of wsl. So a fresh attempt can be made (without leftover/previous settings affecting it).

Hope you understand what im getting at... Thanks.

Thanks! If you still have (and are able to share) (some of) those logs, perhaps that could help discover what's at hand.

FWIW; I asked my colleagues (@chelnak and others) that are more familiar with WSL2 to have a peek to see if there's common cases that we could possibly address in our docs. The tricky bit with these things is to find the right balance between issues that we know can happen (but can't avoid), and .. documenting all possible problems with WSL2 (or other things); we of course want to avoid duplicating Microsoft's own docs on WSL2 or "all of StackOverflow".

Having more details would help though!

Thank you. i dont have any logs anymore - ive wiped my pc numerous times during my 'investigations'. ive just installed the latest DD (4.42) and the opening error msg has gone. all logs are error free. wsl2 is good. links, channels, communications, tunnels... all of it is good. the new version of DD feels more polished and slick. Thanks a lot to you'all over there.

ive got a nice little routine for returning wsl to (windows installation) defaults - i think! i can discuss it if anyone else feels the need.

Thanks again. Have a great weekend.

Good to hear things ultimately resolved for you.

If you have that nice little routine written down already; feel free to post it here!
