If known, describe the steps to reproduce the issue:

I have meet the same problem on my PixelBook 2017. And I solved this problem by a temporary solution according to summary on some pages on Internet, without audio problem.(only test in xfce4) It seems that Google remove something so that the program cann't run properly.(https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton/discussions/4968),so I just follow the comments below the page to reinstall cras.

1. Install ChromeBrew You can refer to the install guide on the project page
2. Run

brew install cras

3. Delete the chroot you created before and then reexcute crouton you should find the program no longer failed. (I failed to instll kde and gnome envirment but the xfce4 successed)

But when I enter the Xfce4 I found the audio did not works. And I find that solution https://askubuntu.com/questions/879037/pavucontrol-stuck-at-establishing-connection-to-pulseaudio-please-wait. Just excute

pulseaudio --check
pulseaudio -D

But it will lose effectiveness when I reboot.So I had to put the commands into a .sh file and add it to Xfce4's startup program list.
