appears to be an issue in yt. this does seem to work in @ashkelly's fork on the yt-4.0-new-octree branch:

this was issued into a PR for yt a while ago, and is just awaiting merging into mainline:

if you run into this issue and need 4.x support for the time being for particle based codes, best to use @ashkelly's fork above.
