An upgrade of OpenSSL should resolve your issues. I have tried OpenSSL 0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 01 Jul 2008 with the same error with you, The error disappeared when i update openssl to OpenSSL 1.0.1e-fips 11 Feb 2013
