mspdebug with bus pirate: this driver does not support raw USB access

I have a bus pirate:

and am trying to run mspdebug with the bus-pirate driver, which runs into the following error:

bp: this driver does not support raw USB access

Is this an issue with the bus pirate driver for mspdebug, or related to the bus pirate firmware?

EDIT: I've subsequently tried to specify the device -d /dev/ttyUSB0, but I believe the final problem, which I can't resolve is: bp: this driver does not support Spy-Bi-Wire. My target does not offer SBW, only 4-wire JTAG, which from what I understand does not work in this setup.
