Accessibility feature request to make petals, certain fonts and cursor glow bigger

Open elemanzer opened this issue 1 year ago • 4 comments

A few accessibility features that would drastically improve qol for the visually challenged:

  1. Petals and fonts indicating creature level were halved with high res textures, making them extremely hard or impossible to read. An option to at least restore them to low res keeper sizes would be appreciated. Beyond that an allowance to make them 50% to 300% bigger would help those with greater visual needs.
  2. Same as 1 but for fonts used in the hand-picked creature list appearing next to the hand of evil. The creature icons would likely need to be scaled or spaced out to accommodate bigger fonts.
  3. High res dk made everything darker (which is great in its own way). So an option to increase the cursor/hand of evil's glow radius would be really helpful in making more of the user's object of focus more visible. Note that this is very different from increasing gamma which increases the brightness for everything (and make little difference) as the contrast between light and dark is more useful for the visually impaired.

@elemanzer there already is an CREATURE_STATUS_SIZE setting in keeperfx.cfg, and a HAND_SIZE setting too. Would that be enough for you for 1)

CREATURE_STATUS_SIZE is VERY close to perfect. But as you can see below things become obscured in close quarters at double size. Decoupling thought bubbles and petals would likely solve the issue.

HAND_SIZE is good as is. The hand is plenty large which helps with tracking/approximating the cursor position when transitioning to a dig cursor. Tracking the cursor on the room/creature panel is a different story though. Making cursor /pointer size bigger or adding a tail would be more useful to others down the line but in my case I can live without it and 1,2 and 3 would have a bigger impact.

@elemanzer That last screenshot does not happen for me., they get neatly stacked above each other. Can you still reproduce it? And if so, how exactly?

Yup. Still happens. Set creature status size to 32 and fill a small layer with skeletons. You won't be able to see flower petals of some creatures in close proximity as they're obscured by the thought bubbles.
