[Proposal] Add contributor guidelines to the README on issue "assignment" and the website WG
I am under the impression that any community member can raise and issue but the website wg should agree that this issue should be worked on. I also don't think issue assignment is a thing and if an issue is not actively worked on (no open pr against the issue), it is avaliable for anyone to work on it without needing to be assigned.
I have often seen folks asking to be assigned to an issue, it not being clear that an issue is awaiting approval from the wg, and sometimes seen multiple folks raise PRs for the same issue.
I think having a reference to the website wg and some guidelines for contributing added to the readme would be useful here
Great job

Thanks for creating this issue. I agree that this will be really helpful and I am actually working on adding/improving our contribution guidelines (hopefully soonish).
"I'd like to work on this! I'll be drafting a PR to update the README with the guidelines on issue assignment and the Website WG.
Hi @sarahboyce,
I have submitted a Pull Request to address this proposal. I added a "Contributing" section to the README.rst that clarifies the role of the Website Working Group and the project's policy on issue assignment.
You can review the PR here: https://github.com/django/djangoproject.com/issues/2375
Thank you! But I do think members of the website WG might need to be the ones working on this issue 😊 I won't review the PR as I am not sure what would be correct in terms of guidelines
