Vampire can't Eat?

Made a Vampire Rogue just to try it. I could not eat any of the food I found (ration, tripe ration, tin) and although I attacked and Bit many creatures it did not alleviate my hunger. Eventually I died of hunger which also seems a little unvampireish. Maybe I am just missing something. Is there a way to eat with a Vampire or was this a bug / glich.

You can (and should!) suck fresh corpses dry (by 'eating' them). You've got 3 turns for that, after that you can't consume them anymore. Btw vampire is considered a challenge for those who are bored by Slash'EM with an 'easy' class.
