If you are only wearing a ring and its inventory letter is e for example, after you've removed it, the game will ask you want you want to eat.

It also happens when you're just wearing body armor and a cloak, or T-shirt + body armor, or T-shirt + cloak

Combinations that have to be taken off in a fixed order like those you mentioned are not considered.
