pdflatex support?

Is it possible to make this package work with pdflatex?

My naive try was to put the files "academicons.sty" and "academicons.ttf" into the project directory and install "academicons.ttf" on the system. However, the compiler compains with: "Encoding scheme `TU' unknown." and "Bad character code (59865)."

I found a workaround using tikz here: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/445563/ieeetran-how-to-include-orcid-in-tex-pdf-with-pdflatex Is that the only solution?
