Export to MS Word does not use styles

Open david-wendelken opened this issue 3 years ago • 3 comments

The export to Microsoft Word is less useful than it could be.

Please consider an option to defining styles for the different elements of the script (Title, Name/Address, Page Numbers, Scene Headings, Action, Character, Parentheticals, etc.,

This would enable those proficient with MS Word to adjust the format of the script to its final form much more easily.

If you are interested in doing this, I'll be glad to provide you with a sample KitScenarist file and a corresponding, properly styled Word document as a test case.

Basically, KIT Scenarist export styles like SCENE HEADING/ACTION/etc. not sure I correctly understand what you mean here... Can you explain it in a bit more detail?

MS Word has built in styles like Title, Heading 1, Heading 2, Normal, etc. Each style comes with settings for font, character size, margins, bold, etc. One can create custom styles as well. In addition, styles can be defined in relation to one another. For example, I might define Heading 1 (the biggest, most important heading) as being left-justified, in a specified font and boldness, etc. I can then define Heading 2 as being just like Heading 1 except make the character size a bit smaller. That way, if I change something in Heading 1's definition, Heading 2 will inherit that change. Sort of a poor man's class inheritance for text settings!

If you created custom MS Word styles for each type of text in your play that you export (and assigned the corresponding text you export to those styles), the MS Word document would be a smarter one. If someone did need to do some post-export processing in MS Word, this might well make their life easier.

I would make this an option, with the existing simple text export being the other choice.

If it would be helpful, I can create a script in your software, export it, and format it in MS styles by way of example.

Okay, an example will be great! Then we can continue discussing more concrete things about it.
