when i am doing merging on css and js , minifying is not working how can i do this?

how to check error logs....tell me where is log file?

You need to activate it if not already done, in menu System > configuration > advanced > developer > log.
Then you have to get access to the files where are installed Magento and go to /magento_path/var/log/
For PHP log, check your server admin panel or similar
