any ideas what might be going on?

Looks like a bug in btrfs-progs and/or kernel when performing send/receive operations. Try using latest versions of btrfs-progs and update to a newer kernel. If this does not help, ask in the btrfs mailing list (I remember there was a bug related to linux capabilites in send/receive, can't find it right now...)

I'm running btrfs-progs v5.4.1 and send/receive is pretty buggy. It occasionally claims not to be able to find a clone source even when everything is correct, and suspending a btrfs send/receive pipeline (e.g. with CTRL+z) - or a btrbk process that's doing that under the hood - reliably makes it barf on resume.
