feature request: encrypting messages

Open Joshix-1 opened this issue 5 years ago • 13 comments

add a setting on a guild/channel base wich automatically encrypts all your messages with a specified key you're sending. (This could allow you to send animated emotes without Nitro) Then automatically decrypt the message on the client so you and everyone who uses the same key for de/encryption can see it as a normal message.

Why not just use Matrix?

Why not just use Matrix?

Totally agreed.

Then you could talk privat to your friend without switching the app. You could tell you friend something really private without even switching the chat. And I don't think it will be difficult to develope (sadly I can't code in go), so why wouldn't you implement it? I think it is a cool little addition. And it would be a reason for others to get this client.

I must say that I use Discord for normies who can't use a saner thing/protocol. So, if you want your messages to be "private", you should not use Discord at all.

But why do you think it wouldn't be a good idea to have the option to use discord private & save?

I think you mean "save". The thing is, you are not allowed allowed to use Discord with a 3rd party app (check the TOS). It would be better for those who want privacy and safety to use some saner thing/protocol like Matrix or Tox and encourage the developers to develop on those things.

this should be implemented with a plugin imo because it's not an officially supported discord feature.

The whole thing done in here is not "officially" supported by discord anyways...

Could act like Signals app dose with SMS. IF reciving useres has gtkcord or the plugin send encrypted if not send standard?

I wouldn't enable it automatically, because many people use more than one client.

ok seriously though, it doesn't make sense to implement this in a basic discord client, as other users have pointed out, matrix is a much easier, and safer solution . if encryption were to be added to this client, it would likely be a rather shaky implementation, using more well establish protocols makes much more sense, but regardless this definitely seems out of the scope of the project .

would it be possible to integrate this? https://github.com/leogx9r/DiscordCrypt

Mhowser avatar Jul 16 '20 19:07 Mhowser

nope, that's a javascript plugin that also uses BetterDiscord's API
