Fix for negative substring on OSX. Should work with other systems too, needs testing though.

+1 Works on OSX bash, Debian 7 bash and apparently in zsh emulating bash as well according to #2

+1, I had errors like /usr/local/bin/gnu-pricing: line 51: -2: substring expression < 0 in OS X. I was wondering if this is because OS X ships with an old version of bash.
