Equal sign not tamed

The = looks like problematic in filenames

touch a=e
ls
# 'a=e'
rm a=e # works

touch a=e
ls
# 'a=e'
rm a\=e # works too ?!

Why does equal sign are not tamed ?

It's a weird char as it's escaped by ls
