Fascinating, it appears the contents of that macro were treated as neutralized, so the macro was never treated as proper TeX.

These are really hard to spot on our own (as they don't raise Errors and happen quietly), so this issue report is quite valuable - thank you for filing it in! It's a fidelity bug in latexml that we'll iron out.
