Cortex - out of memory

Open Revolta77 opened this issue 4 years ago • 18 comments

Failed to initialize miner on GPU0: ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 8GB: out of memory

Whats the problem?

Revolta77 avatar Jan 03 '21 22:01 Revolta77

Also getting this issue. RTX 2080 8GB...

MikeSim1 avatar Jan 23 '21 16:01 MikeSim1

same issue here, RTX 2070 8GB. I read somewhere else that Cortex requires minimum 11GB on Windows 10, is that the issue? If so that would mean most out of the box GPUs wouldn't have enough memory to mine it, which could be the reason there's only 44 miners right now

Same issue. RTX 2070 super 8GB.

Same here increased windows page file size to greater than the total memory of all my gpus. -this still did not fix the issue. 1060 6gb + 3090 24gb page file size: 30800MB

1060 6gb + 3090 24gb

It didn't even run on the 3090?

MikeSim1 avatar Feb 02 '21 17:02 MikeSim1

Apologies for the lack of detail it did run on the 3090, just not the 1060 6gb edition.

Are you able to see how much memory is being used when it's running? This might be the quickest way to get an answer to whether or not the miner is busted or it legitimately needs more memory.

Also getting the same error. I’m running MSI RTX 2080 Super gaming x. Has anyone tried earlier releases of gminer to see if it’s something to do with the latest version/s?

EDIT: I just found this info, not sure if it would help or not?:

Increase virtual memory Most mining software requires at least 16 GB virtual memory. In systems with many GPU's, even more virtual memory is required to be able to work well with all mining software and algorithms. A good rule of thumb is to allocate 4 GB plus the total amount of memory on all GPU's. When using 5 GPU's with 6 GB of memory each, the virtual memory to allocate should be 4 GB + 5 * 6 GB = 34 GB.

Open Control Panel and go to System Select Advanced system settings Click the Settings button in the Performance section Select the Advanced tab Click the Change button in the Virtual memory section Define at least 16 GB virtual memory size

Try increasing your page file to 34816, please let us know if this helps 6gb + 24gb + 4gb = 34gb

Same issue here:

09:26:20 Failed to initialize miner on GPU0: MSI GeForce RTX 3070 8GB [0000:08:00.0]: out of memory
09:26:20 No devices for mining

My pagefile is set to 34GB:

Get-CimInstance Win32_PageFileSetting | fl Name,InitialSize,MaximumSize

Name : c:\pagefile.sys
InitialSize : 34816
MaximumSize : 34816

Using Gminer v2.44

I am running also running a Nvidia 2080 and getting the same error: "Failed to initialize miner on GPU0: ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 8GB [0000:0a:00.0]: out of memory No devices for mining" I am running Windows 10 with 16gb of ram. I have tried increasing windows 10 page file however the error still occurs.

Found out that the issue has to do with Windows 10. For mining Cortex, you'll need to be running Linux or Windows 7.

Currently running a linux-distro for Cortex-mining on the same machine, without problems.

Interesting, thanks for shedding some light on this.

Do you think a virtual machine Linux would work? Or if I run gminer with compatibility win7 Also is there another miner with nvidea compatibility that can mine cortex?

I'm having the same issue on windows 10 and on linux (manjaro) on a dual-boot

magellancl avatar Apr 01 '21 22:04 magellancl

Same issue here with 2070S both on Win 10 and Linux (PopOS! flavor) with dual boot. Overclocking or not, still the same.

same issue on windows 11 / 3070 ti
