Fail gracefully when plugin is used in invalid environment

When you apply this plugin to a project that either does not have an underlying git repository or does not have any commits, an error is thrown and the project will not build.

This is not ideal- we should instead give a meaningful error message or at the very least allow the project to continue to build.
