I think the team at Google have had this issue on their list since App Inventor since at least 2 years ago. I hope any work they've done towards accomplishing in-app hardware button recognition is either released by them or passed onto the MIT group.

I am currently relying on soft buttons, such as the "< Back to apps" button on an app's "page". There are also back and forward buttons when browsing though a listing of apps.

To the end-user though, this is a bewildering design. I would jump on this one as soon as the framework became available.
