feh only zooms correctly in bspwm after modifying window

When I open a new image with feh, it opens as a tiled grid, even if I'm using the scale-down and auto-zoom options. It does fit correctly if I either resize the window or move it to another workspace using bspwm.

What it is supposed to look like (after resizing the window, changing its state in bspwm (tiled, floating..), moving to another workspace or right-clicking, going into the File sub-menu and clicking "Reload")

It is supposed to fit right after opening. Here is my "default" theme: default --image-bg #1a1b26 -Z -.

I'm having the same issue in Gentoo bspwm.
