JPEG2000 support

Open comstock opened this issue 4 years ago • 1 comments

The preferred preservation format, used by cultural institutions, for the digitization of library and museum collections is JPEG 2000 Part 1 (Core) jp2. There are a gazillion high-quality JP2 images of significant information- and cultural-resources held by museums, research libraries, more. It would be great if JP2 support was added to feh. Thanks for considering. #featureRequest

feh doesn't handle file formats itself. Instead, it relies on Imlib2 to provide loaders for different filetypes.

There's an open Imlib2 issue regarding JPEG2000 support, so it might end up there eventually. In the meantime, feh can use ImageMagick to convert JPEG2000 files to a format it understands. feh --conversion-timeout 10 some_file.jp2 should do the trick for you.

Note that ImageMagick-based conversion is significantly slower than native Imlib2 support. On my machine, loading a 10MP file takes about five seconds. The number behind --conversion-timeout specifies how many seconds feh is willing to wait for the conversion to complete before considering the file to be unloadable.
