remove duplicated code and other clean ups

• [x] Some of the functions in here should be refactored to a common space
• [x] module_index module_path_index and module_symbol_index are essentially the same component we were iterating on. We should drop the two lovers and refactor to clean up whatever is left.
• [ ] publish a tag instead of going off a git commit.
