People can add me back to a group I have left

Open adbenitez opened this issue 6 years ago • 7 comments

I have created a group, after some time I decided to leave the group, other user have added me to the group again, DC didn't ask if I would like to re-join the group, and all messages since I was added back to the group where downloaded, which translate in unwanted messages(spam) that have a cost to me.

  • Platform (android/blackberry/anbox): Android 6.0
  • Device: BLU
  • Delta Chat Version: 0.92
  • Expected behavior: If I leave a group and some other member invite me back to the group, DC ask me if I want to join the group and do not download any message from the group until I accept to join the group.
  • Actual behavior: If I leave a group and some other member invite me back to the group, the group is accepted automatically and all messages are downloaded, without my consent.
  • Steps to reproduce the problem: Invite some contact to a group, after both are in the group, leave the group, ask your contact to add you to the group again.

@adbenitez thank you for you report.

currently, this is by design. there is no method to avoid others to add you to the groups (again).

i would regard this as a feature request therefore.

but i think this can be optimized in the core, so that the new addtions at least pop up as "contact requests" or so.

and, of couse, you can ask people not to add you - and if this does not work, block them (i've not tested this, but a group-add should not come through in this case).

i'd call it a "UX glitch", somewhere between a feature and a bug ;)

i've personally often heart the complaint from people who do not like getting added to arbitrary chat groups without consent.

The main problem for me and others here is that downloading messages have a cost, I could block the contact but by the time DC would has downloaded a bunch of messages that have a cost for me, anyway at the time this haven't represented a real spam issue... but I guess it could be.

moving this to core, there is not much android can do on this behavior currently.

What's when they add you to a new group you also don't want to be in?

well, if you can leave the group again then, if this happens over and over from people who want to annoy you, you can either speak with them or block them.
