It's also not clear what to do about the nonstandard footer appended by the mailing list to the chat message: it is currently displayed as [...].

Currently (on master, this PR doesn't change this) it's not removed - anyway, I think that the subject is the bigger issue here, we can remove the footer again if users complain.
