Transfer DKMS repository to its own organization

Open scaronni opened this issue 11 months ago • 3 comments

Hi @gk4delltech you're listed as the only person for the Dell organization on Github: https://github.com/orgs/dell/people

We're trying to move DKMS to its own organization as it's no longer affiliated with Dell. It was abandoned with no people working on it and somehow through direct contact I managed to get access as an administrator and revive it.

As of now, it's been years since anyone from Dell had commit access to this repository.

I don't know who to contact as all the old Dell accounts are long gone from the repository access:

Can you help in trasnferring the repository in a new organization?

Thanks, --Simone

+1

Once we get the repository moving, what do you think about renaming the master branch to main as well?

Sure, no issue.

@anbe42 I've moved the master branch to main already.

@anbe42 my discussions with Dell didn't go anywhere. Shall we close the current merge requests we are reviewing and move everything on our own to a new project? This means all the issues and merge requests will be lost.

Since i'm not an admin of the dell space, this will not be a migration; so we will empty/archive this repository, put a disclaimer, and move everything to a new place.

hi @scaronni , I'm the open source governance for github.com/dell/ Somehow, I missed your January message. I have escalated this internally.

Ah thanks!. Last message the request was to keep the repository for historical reasons (can't understand why, but ok). Since we don't want to lose all the issues, merge requests, etc, my proposal was:

  • Migrate the project somewhere else (ex. dkms/dkms) so everything is preserved.
  • You clone back the project in dell/dkms, and then freeze it in read only mode (or whatever you need).

Thanks.

Btw, @gk4delltech, I had an email exchange with you and some other Dell folks a few months ago, but at one point they stopped responding. This is what I was referring to in my previous message. Unfortunately I don't have that email thread anymore.

@gk4delltech do you have any update?

scaronni avatar Sep 24 '25 07:09 scaronni

@scaronni I've pinged the OSPO team again.

And we're now at https://github.com/dkms-project/dkms !

Many thanks @gk4delltech for helping out!
