I imagine a big problem would be gtk. If we were rendering in html instead it would be easier.

gtk could be asked as a C dependency. It's buildable under the thee main OS types. Yes, HTML is good direction. This is an interesting package for such GUI - https://wiki.haskell.org/Threepenny-gui
