Software 2.9

Will hacks be available ton the latest software 2.9?

DrDoom42 avatar Jul 20 '21 07:07 DrDoom42

Once 2.9 is out of beta, then @ddvk will determine if/when the hacks will be updated. So far @ddvk has always had the hack updated within days of a firmware version's public release. At the moment 2.9 is still a BETA release. Keep watching the github repo for updates.

2.9 is now out of beta 😉

linuskoester avatar Aug 13 '21 11:08 linuskoester

Remarkable has not indicated that it is out of beta, but they aren't always the quickest on publishing the new details. https://support.remarkable.com/hc/en-us/sections/115001534689-Software-releases I have seen several reports now of 2.9 being installed (outside of the beta), so it looks like it is released!! Now, once @ddvk has time, we will hopefully see the new patch released! Thanks for the update @CrazyEasy!

pstemper avatar Aug 13 '21 13:08 pstemper

It's officially there as well

ignash3d avatar Aug 16 '21 18:08 ignash3d

Wonderful!! Now, once @ddvk has time, we will hopefully see a hack for this version. Looking forward to it!!

pstemper avatar Aug 16 '21 18:08 pstemper

Looking forward aswell! @ddvk do you have an ETA already? If not, that's totally fine. Take your time!

linuskoester avatar Aug 16 '21 18:08 linuskoester

I got so used to pencil tool from ddvk that I can't draw without it anymore, it's so much more intuitive.

ignash3d avatar Aug 16 '21 19:08 ignash3d

I think it's always a good idea to make a new issue when a new version comes out. I like to get informed about updates on the repository. Asking for ETAs and commenting that you want it as well, instead of just marking the first post a thump up, feels repetitive and redundant, though. It also causes unnecessary notifications to people who don't like to miss any updates.

I'm pretty sure he is already working on it or at least planning to do it. In products like the reMarkable I see no need to stress for updates, since it's a closed system that works fine without updates. I don't mind if it takes 3 days or 3 weeks until the hack arrives (as long as it comes out long enough before a new update gets rolled out). I'm happy that it will reach us, eventually, and I favor stability over very short ETAs. I think he has no obligation to provide any ETAs in any case.

Please think about it. :)

martin-braun avatar Aug 16 '21 22:08 martin-braun

Instead of getting an ETA, does anyone know, historically, how much time passes between an official x.y release and ddvk's update?

mikecharles avatar Aug 17 '21 13:08 mikecharles

Historically I'd say days. Right now he's been a little MIA though, so it might be a bit. Likely he's on vacation or something.

Eeems avatar Aug 17 '21 13:08 Eeems

last year's vacation time was some-when around August, too

dstango avatar Aug 17 '21 15:08 dstango

... This is edging towards stalkerish. 😜

Could we donate to get him a GPS and heartbeat sensor implanted.... just to be informed? Seriously, I got the update by accident.... I don't mind using the original version for the time being. I believe the 2.9 hack needs some more care as usual as the new features are partially redundant to the ddvk hacks. Guess it takes some time to decide how to deal with this.

How did you mange to update by accident? You literally pulled the switch and confirmed ...

Anyway, there is a Sponsor button in the top right corner, just saying. ;)

Auto update can sneak up on you.

Exactly... Left it on from the previous update where for whatever reason I was on the long waiting side. This time, I was "lucky".

torwag avatar Aug 17 '21 21:08 torwag

Auto update can sneak up on you.

I can see how this can happen. This precious hack should let anyone disable auto-update when it's applied to not risk losing it, immediately.

Maybe it would be a good idea to print a hint in the console after applying the hack, permanently. Or maybe it's possible to disable auto-update on that step, altogether. I think the default intent is not to lose the hack by any auto-update mechanism, anymore.

I made an issue regarding this. #340

There are some news for the version 2.9?

MN-company avatar Aug 18 '21 17:08 MN-company

@MN-company There's no news yet. If I understand the context correctly, @ddvk is afk (vacation?). As he is sole maintainer, version 2.9 is not expected until @ddvk is back. No need to bump up the thread, it serves no purpose.

i was on a vaction. now i'm a bit depressed, but i'll try to find the time to port it...

ddvk avatar Aug 19 '21 07:08 ddvk

For those of you who, like me, accidentally had auto-update enabled and then were distraught at the lack of remarkable-hacks, it is possible to downgrade back to 2.8 and get your hacks back!! :) Use the switch.sh script. Step-by-step instructions here:

https://old.reddit.com/r/RemarkableTablet/comments/oxqk8f/software_rollback/h7opp19/

ddvk, depression sucks. I hope you have people in your life that you can talk to face-to-face. Please don't feel stressed about keeping up with the software versions, you have already earned my sponsorship with your existing work!

technicalguy avatar Aug 19 '21 07:08 technicalguy

relax ! :) - start planning your next vaction (to fight the depressed feelings :P ) - and then, start porting.

people need to learn to stay calm - even they need to wait a little for things..... :)

thx for all your input and work on the ddvk !

Is there a tutorial on how to work out a patch for any version ? Any devs in the userbase can take over and experiment of that. If not, perhaps it should be an option to consider...

zgornel avatar Aug 19 '21 14:08 zgornel

@zgornel It is covered in the FAQ:

How do you make the patches? I wrote some tools, I change the code, I patch

Why is this not open source? I don't own the source, the legality is dubious, not in reMarkable AS's best interest due to various reasons, etc

update, i've started working on porting

Big thanks and welcome back.

Just one thing: I've seen the update at a friend and have to say their recent file panel is weak compared to your implementation, because yours show way more files, although without preview. I think previewing recent files is not necessary, since we had them open, recently, so we most likely know how they look before opening them.

Please try to preserve your hack when it comes to recent files. Maybe just showing favorites in their panel, instead? Alternatively, you could leave their panel untouched, I wouldn't mind, as long as I don't lose the long recent file list.

Thank you! :)

Ddvk doesn't have notebook previews like in rM implementation afaik. I would love the button to toggle between them.

Although I understand the request to keep the list of recently used files, and you might be aware as well, but the file panel in 2.9 is a longer list than it seems as you can scroll (swipe) to the right to the end of the list. Right now there are 12 notebooks in my file panel I can see and access.

Blerkselmans avatar Aug 26 '21 12:08 Blerkselmans

Maybe there could be a toggle in the toggle panel to switch bt native and ddvk implementation ? Like fancy/productive modes ?
