Retain `if_/3` formulations, yet attain performance of if-then when needed

Would it be possible (e.g.) to run suitable goal expansions on the original if_/3-based code of ccd.pl, to obtain the current fast (->)-based implementation 'on-the-fly' when needed? Can we have the best of both worlds?
