Not sure what we need to do here. Disconnect the video stream on background and re-enable on foreground? Drop all model connections and re-establish?

Testing needed.

Wow, this would be a MASSIVE improvement, IMO this is not far behind the missed shot bug in importance.

Hmm. I take it as a bad sign that DJI's own apps (e.g. DJI Go and DJI Debug Bridge) have the same problem :(
